The Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) today released six wheat and two mango varieties for cultivation.

The varieties, cleared by the Central Varietal Committee, were made available for circulation today at the 43rd Convocation of IARI. ‘‘The varieties are for different zones, one specifically for the plains in Tamil Nadu,’’ said IARI director Dr S. Nagarajan.

Two varieties of maize and a new soybean variety were also cleared.

At the convocation, Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said scientists should focus on improving qualitative, but cost-effective, agricultural produces by synergising technologies.

Certain important pulses and coarse cereals demand due attention from the research fraternity, the Minister said. Research in these areas would directly help the poor and marginal farmers.
