The Opposition Asom Gana Parishad has appealed to the ULFA to shun the path of violence and come forward for a negotiated settlement of its various demands.

Addressing the ULFA chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa as ‘‘brother’’, AGP’s legislature party secretary Dilip Kumar Saikia appealed to him through a three-page open letter. ‘‘History guides us that all our grievances could be sorted out amicably through discussions and in that spirit I would call upon your organisation to consider my appeal for a negotiated settlement of the issue,’’ Saikia’s letter sent to newspaper offices here read.

He reminded the ULFA chairman that the people of the state were in favour of peace and that the ULFA too should express its desire to sit for a meaningful dialogue with the Government of India as early as possible.

The AGP leader also called upon the Centre to initiate dialogue with ULFA leaders without any pre-condition. He added that the government should not hesitate holding talks outside the country as it had done in the case of the Naga rebel leaders.
