After playing Paro in Sharat Chandra Chatterjee’s Devdas, Aishwarya Rai is set to act in another Bengali literary classic — this time Rabindranath Tagore’s Chokher Bali.

The movie is being directed by award-winning director Rituparno Ghosh. While refusing to talk to the press about his sixth venture — for which shooting is on here — Ghosh confirmed to The Indian Express that Rai would play the female lead of Binodini in it.

She would be cast opposite Prosenjit, son of yesteryear Bollywood actor Biswajit. Legendary Suchitra Sen’s granddaughter Raima Sen would play another female character, Ashalata, in Chokher Bali.

The casting has generated some stir in Tollywood, which has been passing through a crisis because of a string of hits and dropping audiences. Calling it an ambitious role for Rai, film critic Pradip Biswas hoped her talent and Ghosh’s skill would help fruitfully translate Tagore’s timeless classic to the big screen.
