The head of Afghan State Television and Radio, who is believed to have banned women from singing on air in Kabul, has torn up an order from President Hamid Karzai to give up his post, official sources said on Monday.

The row comes as Karzai’s Cabinet sat down on Monday for the fist time since he was elected less than two weeks ago as the head of a transitional government to lead the country towards elections in 2004.

Abdul Hafiz Mansoor, president of Kabul TV and Radio, tore up the order on Sunday night and refused to vacate his office, Information Ministry sources said on condition of anonymity. Mansoor was not available for immediate comment.
