KABUL, FEBRUARY 6: An Afghan commercial jet with 168 people on board was hijacked as it flew out from Kabul today and touched down at an airport in north-western Kazakhstan, officials and reports said.

The jet later took off from Kazakhstan and was probably heading for Moscow, the Afghan Islamic Press news agency said here.

The unidentified hijackers said they wanted to fly on to Moscow, St Petersburg or Kiev, Interfax news agency quoted Kazakh security forces as saying. It gave no details. In Tashkent, the hijackers demanded food and permission to take off, which Uzbek authorities accepted.

Meanwhile, the Taliban regime said it had no contact with the hijackers yet and said safety of passengers was its top priority.
