PUNE, Oct 14: Dr Paul Ratnaswamy, director, National Chemical Laboratory, (NCL) recently inaugurated the National Workshop on Atmospheric Chemistry (NWAC ’99) organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) Delhi, at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) Pune, attended by 80 scientists from the country.
Ratnaswamy emphasised the significance of the workshop.Dr D R Sikka, former director of IITM, delivering the key-note address, spoke about the changing emphasis of atmospheric chemistry, the threat of global warming, and the urgent need to establish a regular network and data centre for standard measurements of aerosols and trace gases.
Studies on atmospheric aerosols and trace gases using lidar and radiometric techniques have been on at IITM, Pune, since 1986, which found very large concentration of aerosol up to an altitude of 200 metres above the surface. Urbanisation, growing population and vehicular traffic were recognised as some factors contributing to increase in aerosol concentration over the location studied.
