The blast in a coal mine owned by NRI steel tycoon Lakshmi N. Mittal in Kazakhstan’s Karaganda region has claimed 23 lives.
As many as 92 people were working in the Shakhtinskaya mine of JSC Ispat Karmet when the blast took place. ‘‘Of the 92 people working at the accident spot, 23 people have died, three have been injured and the rest have been rescued safely,’’ a release by the LNM group said.
Of the injured, one has been discharged from the hospital and the condition of other two was stated to be stable, it said, adding the bodies of the dead have been brought out of the mine.
The mine has been completely evacuated and all production operations have been stopped till safe operating conditions are restored, the release said.
On hearing of the accident, L.N. Mittal, chairman of Mittal Steel Company, the world’s biggest steel producer, has rushed to the accident site along with company Chief Operating Officer Malay Mukherjee to take first hand stock of the situation and pay condolence to the families of the bereaved.
A regional group has been formed for handling the emergency situation, the company release said.
