
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the state Government, under its ongoing Nirmal Gujarat programme, cut short the prison terms of 209 convicts lodged in various jails across the state. As many as 92 of them walked out of Sabarmati Central Jail.
“This decision of the Government has given me a new lease of life. I will enter the family-fold again today,” said lifer Ramabhai Bharwad, who was released from Sabarmati Central Jail. Jujarsingh Jadeja from Rapar taluka in Kutch recounts how he had entered into a fight with his cousins that had landed him behind bars for ten years. “I have done a lot of work in the jail and now, I’ll work outside the jail to educate my sons,” said Jadeja.
Gujarat IG Prison Tirth Raj said that the released convicts had either completed 12 years of their jail term or had completed 90 per cent of their term.
