Two NSCN(K) cadres were gunned down by Army personnel in an operation launched in the Noney region of Tamenglong district. Troops also recovered arms and ammunition as well as an IED from the slain militants.
The NSCN (K) and the Centre have a ceasefire agreement in Nagaland, where the outfit originates, but that agreement does not extend to other states, including Manipur. Both the I-M and K factions of the NSCN are known to be active in Manipur, where four districts are Naga dominated.
Upon receiving information of the movement of armed militants near Noney, an Area Domination Patrol under the 57 Mountain Division proceeded to the area. They were fired upon by the group of militants, a statement from the PRO (DW) said. The troops’ retaliation had to be controlled as the encounter took place near a village. While five of the militants managed to escape, a subsequent search turned up two dead cadres, both in uniform. The release said the group was involved in several cases of extortion.
