BANGALORE, Aug 4: Nineteen passengers were injured when an explosion ripped apart an unreserved compartment of the Madurai-Bangalore Express at Tykal railway station near Bangarpet (nearly 70 km from Bangalore) on Monday morning.
According to Railway authorities, the explosion took place at 6.19 am in the last but one bogie when the train halted at the railway station to give way to a goods train.
The explosives, which were kept under the seat, shattered window panes, ripped the ceiling of the bogie and damaged fuse panels.
Sixteen of the injured were admitted to the General Hospital. Three persons were discharged after first aid.
However, Superintendent of Police (Railways) Govindaraju ruled out sabotage. He said tightly packed gun powder may have gone off due to friction, causing the blast. The police are on the look out for three quarry workers who were travelling in the train and disappeared minutes after the blast, the SP said.
According to Arun Kumar, who was travelling on the train, “I was fast asleep when I heard the blast in the next bogie. I just got up and ran for my life as I thought it was a bomb.”
