Why you should avoid turning off the air vent during long-haul flights

Hint: While it's generally more comfortable to turn the vent off if you're drying out, it also removes a level of protection on flights

Many of us tend to turn off the air vent in an airplane if it is too dry. But medical experts recommend not turning off those vents above your seat, as they play an important role in maintaining air quality and passenger comfort. “When flying, these vents help circulate fresh air into the cabin, ensuring proper ventilation while also aiding in the removal of airborne contaminants such as dust, bacteria, and viruses. This circulation not only contributes to better air quality but also helps reduce the risk of airborne illnesses spreading among passengers,” said Dr Narander Singla, lead consultant, internal medicine, CK Birla Hospital, Delhi.

When the vent is directed towards your upper body or lap, it pushes away airborne particles that may come close. “It doesn’t make you immune to sickness, but it lowers the risk of breathing in unwanted germs while sharing air with hundreds of people,” said Dr Manas Mengar, consultant pulmonologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane.

Additionally, the airflow can regulate temperature and humidity, making the flight more comfortable. According to Dr Singla, modern airplanes are equipped with High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters that capture 99.97 per cent of particles — as small as 0.3 microns, including dust, pollen, and bacteria. “The cabin air is exchanged every two to three minutes, further supporting a healthy environment. For these reasons, leaving the vent on during your flight can help ensure cleaner air, lower the chance of illness, and enhance overall comfort,” said Dr Singla.

What about dryness and discomfort?

Cabin air is naturally dry, so turning the vent off doesn’t change it much. Some people may notice their nose, lips, or skin feeling dry, but this can be managed by drinking enough water, using a lip balm, or applying moisturiser. That way, you keep the benefit of airflow without discomfort, said Dr Mengar.

What should you keep in mind when using the vent?

Dr Mengar mentioned that one should set the airflow to medium and angle it slightly in the front, not directly at the face, to avoid irritation. “This helps create a protective barrier while keeping you comfortable,” said Dr Mengar.

While it’s generally more comfortable to turn the vent off if you’re drying out, it also removes a level of protection on flights. “Keeping it on, you not only get cleaner air to circulate, but you also help to blow germs away, and make your health safer during long-haul flights,” said Dr Mengar.
