Rakhi 2025 in India: Raksha Bandhan, commonly known as Rakhi, is an auspicious Hindu festival that promotes sibling love and is widely observed across the country.
Raksha Bandhan translates as “bond of protection, obligation, and care,” and on the day, sisters tie a string known as a rakhi around their brother’s wrist for expressing love and protection.
Raksha Bandhan originated with the legendary narrative of Lord Krishna and Draupadi. According to the Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna was moved by Draupadi’s worry after cutting his finger. To halt the bleeding, she ripped a piece of her saree and tied it over his finger.
On the festival day, sisters perform aarti, followed by putting a tilak on their brothers’ foreheads, and lastly tie the rakhi. Brothers, in exchange, promise to defend their sisters and give them gifts or money as a sign of their affection.
According to drikpanchang.com, the celebration takes place on the last day of the Hindu month of Shraavan, a full moon day. This year, the festival will be celebrated on Saturday, August 9, 2025, with the auspicious period for tying the rakhi being 5:47 AM to 1:24 PM.
According to drikpanchang.com, the ideal period to tie Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan is in the late afternoon, known as Aparahna, and if that time is unavailable, Pradosh time is an alternative for performing Raksha Bandhan ceremonies.
Raksha Bandhan ceremonies should not be performed during Bhadra and should be avoided for all auspicious activities, as most Hindu holy literature, including Vratraj, warn against using Bhadra time to tie Rakhi during the Raksha Bandhan celebration.
The Rakhi festival celebrates the love, devotion, and link between brothers and sisters and signifies protection, care, and respect; families gather to exchange presents, spend quality time, and eat special and delicious dishes.
