She has been in the industry for over 20 years now, yet Madhurima Tuli says she still has a long way to go — and admits she is still awaiting her due credit as an actor. However, the Tehran actor is quick to add that she feels grateful for not being typecast and for receiving a variety of roles throughout her career. “So I’m pretty much happy,” she tells indianexpress.com in an exclusive interview.
In the conversation, she opens up about working with disciplined co-stars like John Abraham and Akshay Kumar, shares her workout and diet routine, and discusses how she takes care of her mental health. Read the edited excerpts below:
Madhurima Tuli: Yes, it’s been two decades now. I started as a teenager, took a break for a couple of years, and then returned, immersing myself completely. It’s been a roller-coaster ride. There have been ups and downs — the ups have been beautiful and blessed, and the downs have been full of lessons. The idea was to never give up. Thankfully, thanks to my parents and a few friends, I was able to pull through. By God’s grace, it’s been good so far.
Madhurima Tuli: Honestly, I enjoy every platform because I love performing. If the character or story excites me, I’m happy to do it anywhere. Every medium today is a dream — what matters is getting a good character and portraying it well.
Madhurima Tuli: They’re all different in their own ways. I didn’t work with Taapsee on set, but I met her during promotions — she’s fun. John is very, very disciplined, and Akshay Kumar, as we all know, is a prankster. Each brings a different vibe, and it was fun working with all of them.
Madhurima Tuli: Very true! Both Akshay and John are extremely particular about their routines. They love being healthy and are very conscious about their diets. They’re complete fitness icons — their meals, workout timings, everything is prim and proper.
Madhurima Tuli: I’m quite particular about what I eat now. When I first came to Mumbai, I put on almost 25 kilos because I was eating outside all the time and missed ghar ka khana (home-cooked food). That’s when I realised that outside food is fine only once or twice a week. Home food is clean, healthy and hygienic — we even make pani puri at home!
Lately, I’ve become even more careful. I’ve cut out wheat and most carbohydrates. I eat salads, vegetables and eggs, and I try to work out daily. Earlier, I worked out just two or three times a week. Regular exercise really helps build stamina and keeps me focused. It’s a healthy way to live.
Madhurima Tuli: I haven’t felt stereotyped so far because I’ve done very different kinds of roles. But yes, I do feel I haven’t got my due credit yet. I think I still have a long way to go and need that one defining role that changes everything. Still, whatever I’ve done has been appreciated by the audience, so I’m happy — but yes, the due credit is still pending.
Madhurima Tuli: Yes, it can be very difficult. You put your heart and soul into a project, and if it doesn’t work, it’s heartbreaking. The key is to give your best and try not to expect too much — though that’s easier said than done. When a project fails, it can feel very lonely. This industry can be tough — when you’re successful, everyone is around you, but when you fail, very few people stand by you.
You have to find your own strength and remind yourself that failure is a part of life. Take some time to heal, but come back stronger. That’s the only way forward.
Madhurima Tuli: I completely agree. My mornings start with a prayer, followed by lukewarm water with lemon and honey, and then black coffee. Sometimes I work out in the morning, sometimes in the evening. Then I plan how my day will go and take it from there.
Madhurima Tuli: Since I was an athlete, maybe a coach. Or perhaps a fashion designer — I really love fashion.
Madhurima Tuli: Always believe in yourself and never give up, no matter what. There will be times when you have no work and times when you have plenty — never let either affect you too much. Stay balanced and live your life accordingly.
