As the temperatures soar, there’s a mix of dread and anticipation that comes with welcoming the summer season in India. The scorching heat of the sun can make even the most mundane tasks seem like a climb up a steep hill.
While we all look forward to the summer getaways and long evenings, it is no secret that when temperatures rise, it can get increasingly uncomfortable and sweaty. During this time, it is necessary to maintain good hygiene and get rid of all the sweat and dirt.
Many of us make it a point to focus on keeping the body fresh as soon as we step into the house, but we often forget that just pouring water over our feet is not the solution to get rid of the smell. It demands as much care as any other part of the body, especially during summers.
Dr Rasya Dixit, a dermatologist in Bangalore explains that our feet may start smelling due to increased sweating during the warmer months, which can elevate the levels of naturally occurring bacteria and fungi on the skin, potentially leading to foot odour.
She adds, “Enclosed footwear, such as shoes worn for school, sports, or office hours, can exacerbate this issue by trapping sweat. This environment fosters bacterial and fungal growth, making smelly feet more likely.”
Additionally, she continues, individuals with certain conditions, like diabetes, may be more susceptible to skin infections, which can further intensify foot odour.
Dr Dixit suggests the following practical tips or routines individuals can adopt to prevent foot odour throughout the day:
Whenever possible, choose open footwear like sandals, which allow the feet to breathe, reducing sweat accumulation and subsequent odour. Steer clear of footwear made from plastic materials, as they can increase sweating.
If closed shoes are necessary, make it a practice to change socks daily to maintain foot freshness and minimise odour.
After returning from work or outdoor activities, wash your feet with soap, focusing on thorough cleansing and drying, especially between the toes. Regularly trimming toenails also helps in maintaining overall foot hygiene.
Inspect the spaces between your toes for signs of fungal infections, such as white deposits. If any signs of infection are noticed, consult a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.
For those prone to fungal infections, applying a prescription antifungal dusting powder before putting on socks can be a proactive measure in preventing fungal growth.
Improving foot odour, Dr Dixit reveals, involves a combination of choosing appropriate footwear, maintaining strict hygiene practices, and being vigilant about potential infections. When choosing a footwear for this summer, consider the following before making a purchase:
Open footwear like sandals is recommended to prevent sweat accumulation and odour. Avoid plastic footwear, as it can contribute to increased sweating.
Opt for cotton socks over synthetic alternatives. Cotton allows for better air circulation around the feet, reducing the risk of odour.
Before buying your new set of footwear, decide with conviction to prioritise foot hygiene by regularly changing socks and paying close attention to the cleanliness and dryness of your feet as well as the spaces between your toes.
