Navratri is finally here! As passionate as you might be to play dandiya and eat delicacies while you fast, those with heart problems need to be extra careful. Dr Abhay Somani, cardiologist at Ruby Hall Clinic, said fasting during Navratri can pose significant challenges for individuals with underlying cardiac issues.
“Fasting can potentially disrupt the delicate balance of blood sugar, blood pressure, and overall heart health. The act of skipping meals and experiencing dehydration, which is common during fasting, can further exacerbate cardiovascular problems,” he explained.
The general consensus amongst experts seems to be that heart patients should refrain from fasting as one of the concerning aspects is the potential long-term impact on health.
“It may strain the heart due to sudden dietary changes and the high consumption of certain foods post-fasting. A sudden influx of specific nutrients or alterations in sodium levels can strain the cardiovascular system, potentially resulting in complications,” explained Dr Somani.
Though Somani advised against it, if you are still keen on fasting here are some things you can keep in mind.
Seeking guidance from healthcare professionals, especially for those with underlying health conditions, is highly advisable to fast safely and in a manner that supports overall health.
