Karwa Chauth 2023 Date: Karwa Chauth, which is mostly observed in the northern region of the country, is a  celebration of marriage in which the wife fasts for the full day in order to be blessed with a long and healthy life for her husband. It is observed during the Hindu month of Kartik during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi.

According to the Drik Panchang, Karwa Chauth falls on the same day as Sankashti Chaturthi, a fasting day dedicated to Lord Ganesha. This year the event will be observed by ladies on November 1.

On this day, married women fast for the long life of their husbands and only break the fast after seeing and offering to the moon. “The fasting of Karwa Chauth is strict and observed without taking any food or even a drop of water after sunrise till the sighting of the moon in the night,” Drik Panchang states.

Karwa Chauth: History and Significance

Karwa Chauth is also known as Karak Chaturthi, where Karwa or Karak refers to the clay pot used to make a water gift to the moon known as Argha. This Karwa is subsequently presented to a Brahmin or any appropriate woman as Dan.

Karwa Chauth fasting takes place during Krishna Paksha Chaturthi in the Hindu month of Kartik, and according to the Amanta calendar, which is used in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Southern India, it is Ashwin month that is in effect during Karwa Chauth. However, the only difference is the name of the month, and Karwa Chauth is observed on the same day in all states.

Karwa Chauth can be traced back to the Mahabharata, when Savitri implored the deity of death, Lord Yama, for the soul of her spouse. Another chapter in the epic is about the Pandavas and their wife Draupadi. Draupadi sought the assistance of her brother Krishna after Arjuna traveled to the Nilgiris to pray and meditate for a few days. He instructed her to fast as strictly as Goddess Parvati did for the safety of her husband Shiva. Draupadi stuck to it, and Arjuna soon came home safely.
