Every year, Earth Day is celebrated on April 22 with an aim to encourage people to come together for environmental protection. The theme for this year is “Invest in Our Planet”, which focuses on the message of making effort to save our planet using different sustainable practices and eco-friendly projects.
The idea of Earth Day was first introduced by peace activist John McConnell at a UNESCO Conference in 1969 in San Francisco. Earlier, it was proposed to be held on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, however, later United States Senator, Gaylord Nelson proposed to hold it on April 22, 1970. This year marks the 53rd celebration of Earth Day.
Talking about the importance of Earth Day, Shrey Sehgal, Co-Founder, FlowerAura said, “The day is an excellent opportunity for us to reflect on our individual impact on the environment and think of things we can do to reduce our carbon footprint.”
Here are some eco-friendly activities you can do together as a family to invest in your planet, according to the expert:
*Plant a tree: Planting trees is one of the most effective ways to combat climate change and promote a healthy environment. Gather your family and plant a tree in your backyard, a nearby park or a designated reforestation site.
*Clean up litter: Spend some time outdoors and clean up litter in your local community. You can make it a fun game for your kids by setting up a scavenger hunt for trash and recycling items.
*Reduce energy consumption: Turn off the lights and unplug electronics when not in use to save energy and reduce your carbon footprint. Make it a family challenge to see who can use the least amount of energy for the day.
*Start a compost bin: Composting is an easy way to reduce waste and create nutrient-rich soil for your garden. Get your family involved in starting a compost bin and teach them how to properly compost organic waste.
*Go for a nature walk: Explore the great outdoors and go for a family nature walk. Take in the sights and sounds of nature and encourage your kids to appreciate the beauty and importance of our natural world.
*Make eco-friendly crafts: Get creative and make eco-friendly crafts with your kids. Use recycled materials like paper, cardboard and plastic to create art and other fun projects.
*Learn about sustainable living: Use Earth Day as an opportunity to educate your family about sustainable living practices. Watch documentaries, read books and engage in discussions about topics like recycling, conservation and renewable energy.
*Support local conservation efforts/Volunteer with local NGOs: Find a local conservation organization that aligns with your family’s values and support their efforts through donations, volunteering or advocacy.
*Reduce plastic waste: Use reusable bags, water bottles and containers to reduce the amount of plastic waste your family produces.
*Make DIY cleaners: Use natural ingredients like vinegar, lemon juice and baking soda to make DIY cleaners that are safe for the environment.
Concluding, Sehgal said, “By participating in these activities, your family can learn to appreciate and care for our planet. We can instill in our family the importance of taking care of our planet for generations to come.”
