Chaitra Navratri 2023 Date in India: Navratri or the nine divine nights are dedicated to Goddess Shakti and her avatars. Celebrated with much fervour by the Hindu community twice every year — once around this time of the year, and then in the month of September-October, coinciding with Durga Puja celebrations — the nine nights begin on the first day of Hindu lunar calendar, celebrated in the month of Chaitra.

This year, Chaitra Navratri begins on March 22 with Maa Shailputri Puja, and ends on March 31, 2023 with Navratri Parana.

March 22, 2023: Day 1 — Maa Shailputri Puja
March 23, 2023: Day 2 — Maa Brahmacharini Puja
March 24, 2023: Day 3 — Maa Chandraghanta Puja
March 25, 2023: Day 4 — Maa Kushmanda Puja
March 26, 2023 Day 5 — Maa Skandamata Puja
March 27, 2023 Day 6 — Maa Katyayani Puja
March 28, 2023: Day 7 — Maa Kalaratri Puja
March 29, 2023: Day 8 — Maa MahaGauri Puja
March 30, 2023: Day 9 — Maa Siddhidatri Puja, Ram Navami
March 31, 2023: Day 10 — Navratri Parana

As one of the longest festivals celebrated in the country, Navratri actually is observed five times a year. Along with Chaitra Navratri, there are also Ashadha Navratri, Paush/Magh Navratri and Sharada Navratri. Sharada Navratri, celebrated at the onset of autumn, and Chaitra Navratri in spring are the two most prominent ones. Chaitra Navratri is also known as Vasanta Navratri. Rama Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram usually falls on the ninth day during Navratri festivity and therefore, the festival is also called Rama Navratri, according to drikpanchang.com.

Devotees believe that Chaitra Navratri symbolises the triumph of good over evil. It also represents the victory of Goddess Durga over the demon king Mahishasura. People perform kalash sthapana puja on the day and observe fast for nine days where they seek the Goddess’ blessings. During the fasting period, they eat sabudana vada, sabudana khichdi, singhare ka halwa, kuttu ki puri, singhare ke pakore, etc.

Notably, most customs and rituals followed during the nine days of Shardiya Navratri which falls in the month of September or October, are also followed during the nine days of Chaitra Navratri. Ghatasthapana Puja is also performed in both Navratris.
