There is a never dull moment while exploring the flowering season in Bengaluru as with the changing seasons, the city’s natural landscape is a treat to watch. And much of the credit for this goes to the Tabebuias trees. The evergreen Tabebuias is a blooming tree with its flowers turning pink during the winter season and yellow during the summer months. It is popularly known as the ‘Golden Shower’ or ‘Tree of Gold’ due to its stunning hue that reminds one of the golden sunset hours.
Predominantly found in Jayanagar, Lalbagh, Cubbon Park and parts of South and Central Bengaluru, the Yellow Tabebuia is a species of Tabebuia native to South America in Suriname, Brazil, eastern Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. It blooms in Bengaluru between March and April.
Check out some stunning photos of the cityscape under the golden shower of yellow Tabebuias:
Tabebuias are generally 15 to 25 feet tall in height and have silvery foliage, silvery bark and contorted branches and trunk. Leaves of the Tabebuias tree are distinctly narrow and elongated.
The most eye-catching and mesmerising feature of Tabebuias is its sporadic display of different-hued flowers throughout the year. The flowers are borne in a terminal cluster and are two to three-inch-long and of trumpet shape. The leaves generally drop just before the flowers appear.
While it adds to the landscape of Bengaluru with its ‘golden’ shades, the trees also benefit honey bees in collecting nectar.
Tabebuias, also known as the Golden trumpet tree, is a native of Central America and grows best in full sun on any reasonably fertile soil with moderate moisture.
