People often judge women by their clothing. If they wear modern clothes, they can be perceived in a negative way. On the other hand, if they wear traditional clothes, they might be thought of as old-fashioned. Shattering this belief is Anshula Kapoor, who took to social media to pen an empowering note on women’s clothing choices.
With a video showing her wearing a kurta set followed by a set of comfy shorts and a t-shirt, she said, “Sometimes, ghar ke kapde look like this. And sometimes, they look like this. You do you. Who is anybody else to judge you?”
“You want to wear shorts? You wear shorts. You want to wear a kurta? You wear a kurta,” she said, adding that the “moral of the story” is “you do you!”
Anshula further wrote about how women are often restricted from wearing what they want because of other people’s perceptions. “So many of us girls have been in situations where we’re told we can’t wear something because it’s too ‘revealing’ or it’s ‘inappropriate’. I think it’s time we listen to only ourselves when it comes to what we want to wear,” she said, adding, “So, here’s to wearing whatever we choose to wear, at home or otherwise.”
She added that “our clothing choices do not ever mean we are asking for it”. “Clothing choices and consent are unrelated and mutually exclusive. I hope to live in a country and a world where more people understand this,” she concluded.
Several people resonated with Anshula’s thoughts and took to the comment section to share their opinions.
“There’s no reason to deprive yourself of ‘some’ styles or to confine your Style to Society’s Expectations on how one should dress up. Thank you for being an incredible role model and inspiration to so many women,” she wrote.
Another user commented: “And what you wear either way gives no one the ‘right’ to abuse, attack or assault you. Ladies speak up and defend yourselves!”
