‘People should embrace their natural texture to open doors to new possibilities of hairstyling’: Adhuna Bhabani

"My go-to- tip is to always work with natural hair texture. For instance, if someone has curly hair then it is difficult to do something against their natural texture. Also, having a good haircut is very important as it forms the base for any hairstyle," she said.

Celebrity hairstylist Adhuna Bhabani is not only admired for giving celebrities unique hair makeovers but also for her versatile and playful approach to her craft. Co-founder of one of the most popular salon chains, BBlunt, Adhuna also loves to share tips and tricks for good hair days on social media. But that is not all, Adhuna has also created showstopping looks for photoshoots and runways — something she once again did at the recently-concluded Lakme Fashion Week X FDCI.

Talking more about her latest project, the hair whiz tells indianexpress.com about conceptualising hairstyles for models, while also sharing insights into the world of hairstyling, the dos and don’ts for healthy hair, and much more! Read the edited excerpts below:

Tell us about your association with designer Arpita Mehta for LFW and the looks you created?

It was an immense pleasure to collaborate with Dyson for Arpita Mehta‘s spring -summer 2023 showcase at the Lakme Fashion Week. Arpita’s idea of creating a holiday-inspired line that celebrates easy, breezy looks in terms of both clothes and hair was fantastic, and I really got on board with her thought process. Her concept for the summer line revolved around independent women going on a holiday and bringing out their individuality which we showcased through a relaxed and easy aesthetic. Working with the team gave me the opportunity to have some fun while creating hairstyles that are not only easy to wear on stage but also easy for anyone to re-create back home.

Hairstyles can make or break a look. What are the factors you consider while styling?

Some of the key things I consider while deciding on a hairstyle are suitability, bone structure, hair length, and shape. Hair texture is another important factor to be considered as different hairstyles work for different hair textures. Each of these factors impacts which hairstyle will be the most flattering and practical for an individual.

What are the hacks/tips or tricks you swear by when creating a look?

My go-to- tip is to always work with natural hair texture. For instance, if someone has curly hair then it is difficult to do something against their natural texture. Also, having a good haircut is very important as it forms the base for any hairstyle.

Products you will recommend for everyday styling

One should use a good serum that will protect the hair from heat damage, humidity, pollution, and dryness. Go for tools that have intelligent heat control to further reduce heat damage. Also, always use a hair mousse and heat protectant before styling your hair.

What all should a good haircare routine entail?

One should have a good ritual of shampooing or cleansing and conditioning their hair. I would recommend shampooing and conditioning your hair every two to three days, depending on your lifestyle. Along with that, getting regular haircuts helps in maintaining the shape of your hair and prevents split ends. One can also invest in hairstyling tools that do not lead to hair damage while protecting your hair from extreme heat. So, to sum it all up, the key to good hair is protection, a great haircut and a good regular ritual for cleansing the hair and scalp.

What hair trends do you anticipate making it big in 2023?

While previous years were all about being over the top, 2023 is all about minimalism. This can be seen in terms of clothing, skincare, hair care and hairstyling too. People should embrace their natural texture to open doors to new possibilities of hairstyling. One’s personal taste will come into play as opposed to a solid trend taking over. Factors like skin tone, colours that dominate your closet, make-up tones etc. should be taken into consideration.

I also feel that fringes and bangs are going to dominate as there is a huge influence from the 70s. We also included fringes for the Dyson x Arpita show based on the trend and inspiration behind the show. The beautiful thing about fringes is that it’s not a massive commitment. In a place like India, where people like to wear their hair long, it helps you experiment with some part of the hair that is shorter and around the face. It also gives you a little bit of insight as to how you might feel with a different haircut. When it comes to colours, I do think there is some life in poppy fun colours that have taken over the last few seasons. The fashion world is now showing the extreme version as you see toned-down, ready-to-wear colours springing up.

You have styled many Bollywood celebrities. Who according to you has the best hair type to work with?

Deepika Padukone is blessed with very good hair texture, and I like working with her. Among men, I think Shah Rukh Khan’s hair is great and easy to style.
