Karwa Chauth 2025: History

The origins of Karwa Chauth may be traced back to the Mahabharata, when Savitri implored Lord Yama, the deity of death, for her husband’s soul.

Another episode of the epic focuses on the Pandavas and their wife, Draupadi. Arjuna proceeded to the Nilgiris for a few days of prayer and meditation; concerned for his safety, Draupadi sought the assistance of her brother Krishna.

Karwa Chauth 2025: Significance and Celebrations

The fasting of Karwa Chauth is strict and observed without taking any food or even a drop of water after sunrise till the sighting of the moon in the night,” Drik Panchang elaborates.

On this day, married women fast without food and water from sunrise until the moon is sighted in the evening for the long life of their husbands and break the fast only after seeing and presenting to the moon.

Karwa Chauth is also known as Karak Chaturthi, with ‘Karwa’ or ‘Karak’ referring to the clay pot used to make water offerings to the moon, known as ‘Argha’, which is then given as Dan to a Brahmin or other eligible woman.
