Janmashtami 2025 Date: Janmashtami, also known as Krishna Janmashtami, is a widely celebrated Hindu festival, marked with great enthusiasm, devotion, and reverence every year.
It commemorates the birth of Lord Krishna, who is considered one of the most significant gods in Hinduism and a symbol of divinity, love, and righteousness.
The festival is celebrated with much fervour in Mathura (which is said to be the birthplace of Lord Krishna), in parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan, and also in the northeastern states like Assam and Manipur.
Krishna Janmashtami is also known as ‘Krishnashtami’, ‘Gokulashtami’, ‘Ashtami Rohini’, ‘Srikrishna Jayanti’ and ‘Sree Jayanthi’.
The festival falls on the eighth day of the Krishna Paksha, or dark fortnight, in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu lunar calendar, which corresponds to August or September in the Gregorian or English calendars.
This year, Krishna Janmashtami will be celebrated on Saturday, August 16, 2025, the 5252nd birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, with Dahi Handi occurring on the same day as Janmashtami. According to Drik Panchang, the Nishita Puja begins at 12:04 AM on August 16 and ends at 12:47 AM.
Janmashtami is celebrated to commemorate the birth of Lord Krishna, who is revered as the eighth avatar of the god Vishnu in Hinduism.
Devotees mark the festival by fasting, praying, meditating, and singing devotional songs (bhajans) throughout the day and night.
Many temples also organise elaborate ceremonies that recreate events from Krishna’s life, particularly his birth and childhood activities.
Devotees who observe the Janmashtami fast should eat only one meal the day before, according to Drik Panchang. On fasting days, believers use Sankalpa to observe a day-long fast and then break it the next day, when both Rohini Nakshatra and Ashtami Tithi conclude.
No grains should be consumed during the Janmashtami fast until the fast is broken the next day after sunrise, as per drikpanchang.com. All of the fasting rules that apply to Ekadashi fasting should also apply to Janmashtami. Parana, which signifies breaking the fast, should be done at an appropriate time.
