Priyanka Chopra, mother to Malti Marie Jonas, opened up about freezing her eggs in her early 30s in a recent podcast. The actor, who embraced motherhood via surrogacy in 2022, revealed that it was on her mother Madhu Chopra’s insistence that she opted for the procedure. “I felt such freedom, I did it in my early thirties; and I could continue on an ambitious warpath. I wanted to achieve, and I wanted to get to a certain place in my career,” the Bajirao Mastani actor told Dax Shepard in an interview.
“Also, I had not met the person I wanted to have children with. So, with that anxiety-inducing, and with my mom who is an ob-gyn (obstetrician-gynecologist), I thought let’s just do it,” added Priyanka, who froze her eggs in her 30s.
Stating that it becomes harder to become pregnant after 35, Priyanka recalled, “Though my mom had told me this, I did do it for myself as well. I tell all my younger friends that the biological clock is for real. It gets so much harder to get pregnant after 35 and to carry to term and all of that. Especially for women who have been working all their lives. But science is at such an amazing place right now that if you can afford it, this is the best gift you will give yourself because you are taking the power of your biological clock. You can work for however long, your eggs will be of the same age as when you froze them.”
What is egg freezing?
Oocyte Cryopreservation or egg freezing is the process of extracting, freezing, and storing a woman’s eggs, said Dr Nisha Pansare, fertility consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune. “It allows a woman to halt the ticking of her biological clock and bank her eggs for future use — when she is ready to get pregnant,” she said.
What does the procedure entail?
Once you make up your mind, the eggs from your ovaries will be harvested and later frozen, if you are found to be suitable for the procedure, Dr Karishma Dafle, fertility consultant, Nova IVF Fertility, Pune, told indianexpress.com. “These eggs are then stored to be used at later stages. After deciding to opt for the procedure, you will be thoroughly monitored. Before egg freezing, there will be certain tests conducted to detect infections or any factors that can lead to complications. After a step-by-step evaluation, the procedure will be started only if you are found suitable. This procedure will be carried out in three parts,” informed Dafle.
First, an ovarian stimulation will be done, in which synthetic hormones will be injected into the woman in order to stimulate the ovaries and create multiple eggs instead of having only one. “Then, the expert will have to look for the development of follicles (fluid-filled sacs where eggs get mature) with the help of blood tests and vaginal ultrasound. It tends to take some time for follicles to develop inside the ovaries. Then, the unfertilised eggs will be retrieved, frozen, and can be used whenever the woman wants to get pregnant in the future,” Dr Dafle explained.
Who is it for?
This procedure is beneficial for single women in their thirties, those who do not wish to start a family soon, women with cancer and undergoing chemotherapy/surgery, women with endometriosis, anaemia, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and other conditions that can decrease egg quality with time.
Why is it advisable before 35 years?
That is because the number and quality of the eggs drastically go down once a woman turns 35, said Dafle.
