Hartalika Teej 2025 Date and Time: Hartalika Teej is a significant Hindu festival, observed with much enthusiasm by Hindu women in North Indian states like Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
In the South Indian states of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, it is known as Gowri Habba—a festival marked by observing Swarna Gauri Vrat and praying to Goddess Gauri for a happy married life.
Hartalika Teej celebrates Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and their marital harmony with women fasting, praying and applying henna on their hands.
The festival’s origin and significance can be traced back to mythological legend with the word ‘Hartalika’ — ‘Harat’ and ‘Aalika’, translating into ‘kidnapping’ and ‘female friend (friend)’, respectively.
According to the story of Hartalika Teej, Parvati’s friends kidnapped her and took her to a deep forest so that her father would not marry her to Lord Vishnu against her will.
On the day of Haritalika Teej, Parvati worshipped Lord Shiva, leading to his promise of marriage and permission from Parvati’s father, Himalaya.
Hartalika Teej is a festival celebrated on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Hindu month of Bhadrapada, corresponding to August-September of the Gregorian calendar. There is a one-month gap between Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej.
According to Drik Panchang, Haritalika Teej will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, with Hartalika Puja Muhurat beginning at 06:01 AM and ending at 08:34 AM, and Tritiya tithi starting on August 25 at 12:34 PM and ending on August 26 at 01:54 PM.
Vratraj, a religious text, gives detailed ‘vidhi’ to perform Hartalika puja. The festival is celebrated by females only, although the text does not mention anything of the sort.
The main puja steps, as per Vratraj, are as follows:
For the puja, essential items like puja utensils, sandalwood, turmeric, ghee, saffron, camphor, incense sticks, honey, coconut, kumkum, etc., are required.
