Govardhan Puja 2025 Date, Puja Time, Shubh Muhurat: Govardhan Puja is a significant Hindu festival, celebrated with enthusiasm and devotion in various parts of India.
Also known as Annakut, it is marked on the fourth day of Diwali celebrations and falls on the first lunar day of the Kartik month, according to the Hindu calendar.
This year, it will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 22, 2025, with the auspicious time for morning puja being from 06:11 AM to 08:31 AM, and for evening, it will be from 03:30 PM to 05:50 PM, according to Drik Panchang.
Govardhan Puja has its origin in Hindu mythology, specifically the Bhagavata Purana, with the story centred on Lord Krishna, who is considered an incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
According to mythology, the people of Vrindavan worshipped Lord Indra, the god of rain, by offering elaborate ceremonies and sacrifices to ensure a successful harvest.
In a divine display of might, Lord Krishna lifted the massive Govardhan Hill on his little finger to protect the villagers of Vrindavan from the severe rain and flooding caused by an enraged Lord Indra. Krishna’s act of saving people and livestock from Indra’s fury demonstrated the superiority of devotion to nature over costly ceremonies.
The significance of Govardhan Puja is to respect and maintain the environment while promoting togetherness and community bonding. On Govardhan Puja, devotees make a hillock out of food items such as rice, fruits, and sweets to resemble the Govardhan Hill.
The Annakut is presented to Lord Krishna to acknowledge His divine protection and the sacredness of nature. Temples are exquisitely ornamented, and prayers and bhajans (devotional melodies) fill the air.
