Chutney Mary, one of London’s most prominent Indian restaurants, frequented by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to many celebrities, has won the AA Hospitality Awards’ Restaurant of the Year award.
The win is significant because the AA Restaurant Guide not only recognises the best restaurants, hotels, spas, and pubs in the United Kingdom, but is also known to be at par with the French Michelin Guide. The AA Hospitality Awards were in their 30th year, and the fact that an Indian restaurant won was astounding.
The 33-year-old Indian restaurant was founded in Chelsea, London, by sisters Camellia and Namita Punjabi, as well as Namita’s husband Ranjit, in 1990. The fine-dining Indian restaurant was relocated to St. James’ Street, near London’s Ritz Hotel, in 2015.
Chutney Mary’s menu includes contemporary yet innovative Indian cuisine, comprising mouth-watering dishes like Kathal Biryani to Lamb Kormas, with gorgeous, modern décor and plenty of private dining areas. Their beverage selection, which includes popular drinks like Hot Toddy, also reflects the best of Indian cuisine.
Chutney Mary was named Restaurant of the Year in recognition of its creativity and knowledge of Indian regional cuisines.
“This award is completely unexpected, but greatly appreciated by my fellow directors and the committed long-serving team at Chutney Mary,” said Camellia Panjabi at the award ceremony. “It is particularly noteworthy since Chutney Mary is a 33-year-old restaurant; to be acknowledged now for this significant and esteemed achievement is especially touching, considering the focus among media is so often on the newest restaurants, food trends and rising star chefs.”
It should be mentioned that the Panjabis’ hospitality firm, MW eat, is also behind several prominent Indian restaurants in the UK, including Michelin-starrer Veeraswamy and Amaya.
After undisclosed expert inspections and verification by the AA’s Hospitality Awards Panel, winners are chosen as ‘Restaurant of The Year’ if they are best in class in numerous categories each year, with the results reflecting some of the UK’s finest dining experiences.
