Actor Sobhita Dhulipala, who is set to tie the knot with Naga Chaitanya on December 4 at Annapurna Studios in Hyderabad, recently shared her thoughts on what she believes is the perfect ingredient for a happy marriage.

While trust and shared goals are often considered the foundation of a strong relationship, she emphasised the vital role of humour in maintaining a sense of lightness and resilience. “For me, it’s humour… moments of lightness. That’s what binds it together,” she shared during an interview with Galatta India. The host added a personal note, revealing the actor’s witty side: “A lot of people might not know this, or maybe they do, but you are very funny.”

According to reports, the couple’s pre-wedding festivities have begun, with pictures and videos from the Mangala snanam (haldi ceremony) doing the rounds on social media.

But, how important is humour in maintaining a healthy marriage?

Sonal Khangarot, licensed rehabilitation counsellor and psychotherapist, The Answer Room, says, “Humour plays an important role in a relationship — it adds to the playfulness, diffuses tension and enhances intimacy. Shared moments of laughter helps individuals navigate difficult times, find each other during a fight, strengthen their bond.”

Most critical factors — besides humour — that contribute to a happy and lasting marriage

Khangarot highlights, “Marriage, like any other relationship, is a full-time commitment. The promotions and demotions within it are often subtle but can significantly impact family dynamics, sometimes shifting them completely.”

Trust is the foundation of a happy relationship, she says, ensuring that both partners feel supported and secure. “Effective communication is another crucial factor in a successful partnership — the ability to express one’s feelings and be receptive to a partner’s perspective is essential,” she tells indianexpress.com

Shared values and goals provide a common ground, helping couples navigate challenges during difficult times.

Can humour cross the line into being harmful?

The psychologist asserts that there is a fine line between a ‘laughing with me’ and a ‘laughing at me’ approach. When humour comes at the cost of mocking someone, being sarcastic, or belittling, it can erode a relationship, break trust between partners, and weaken the bond. If one partner feels disrespected by a joke, Khangarot says, it is important to “address the issue to prevent such behaviour from being repeated.”

Advice for couples on balancing lightheartedness with deeper emotional connection in their marriage

Life is filled with daily hassles and significant events that can drain a person, says Khangarot. “If you find someone who feels like your soulmate, someone who feels like home, cherish them, celebrate them, and ensure they remain by your side through the good, bad, and challenging times of life.”

“Ultimately, a happy marriage thrives on mutual understanding, respect, and shared joy. By thoughtfully integrating humour and prioritising trust, communication, and shared values, couples can build a relationship that withstands life’s challenges and grows stronger over time,” she mentions.
