A well-known name in the global fashion industry, Sabyasachi Mukherjee has proved his worth yet again — by becoming the first Indian fashion designer to walk the coveted Met Gala carpet.
Dressed in an “embroidered cotton duster coat from the Sabyasachi Resort 2024 collection”, the designer styled his fuss-free look with “tourmalines, pearls, emeralds, and diamonds from Sabyasachi High Jewellery,” as shared on his Instagram page.
The ace designer completed his look with tinted sunglasses and brown loafers footwear, keeping it uber stylish.
But that’s not all; this year, the couturier has also created Alia Bhatt’s outfit for the much-awaited fashion event. For her second appearance, the Brahmastra actor was seen in a sheer pastel-coloured sari that “pays homage to nature’s beauty, echoing the earth, sky, and sea,” replete with embroidered delicate floral motifs using “silk floss, glass beading, and semi-precious gemstones”.
“We looked to the past as a guide for the future, drawing inspiration from the timeless sophistication of Indian nobility. We focused on intricate craftsmanship, incorporating hand embroidery, and precious stones, along with elegant beadwork and fringes, distinctive of the 1920’s fringe style…It has taken a collective effort of 163 dedicated individuals, including master craftspeople, embroiderers, artists, and dyers, investing a total of 1965 man hours to create this ethereal saree,” Alia wrote on Instagram.
Previously, Natasha Poonawalla, the executive director of the Serum Institute of India, donned a Sabyasachi creation at the fashion extravaganza. In 2022, Poonawalla brought together the design signatures of Sabyasachi and Maison Schiaparelli in an architectural gold hand-forged bustier styled with a sari along with a trailing train “embroidered with silk floss thread and embellished with bevel beads, semi-precious stones, crystals, sequins, and appliquéd printed velvet”.
Every year, the Met Gala is organised on the first Monday of May for the who’s who of the fashion and entertainment industries. Curated by former Vogue editor Anna Wintour, the event is hosted by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This year, the theme is The Garden of Time.
