Amidst the haute couture by stalwart designers at the New York Fashion Week this year, Anniesa Hasibuan became the first Indonesian designer to be included at the prestigious fashion event. With this feat, Hasibuan has also become the first hijab designer to feature at NYFW.
The 28-year-old designer showcased a resplendent collection that had all her models clad in beautiful full hijabs. According to fashion magazine Vogue, this is not the first time that Hasibuan is presenting her beautiful hijab designs. Her designs have previously been featured at the Westfield Festival in London in 2015. She had also participated twice in New York’s Couture Fashion Week and won the Best Fashion Designer in 2015, too.
Her colourful and vibrant collection looked beautiful, what with her models carrying the hijab with so much of confidence and panache. Hasibuan’s collection was so loved by all, that reportedly the young designer got a well-deserving standing ovation from the crowd at the fashion event.
It is heartening to see modest fashion increasingly become acceptable at such large-scale fashion events. This comes in the light of increased animosity and scepticism towards the burkini — a type of swimwear and sportswear for women.

In an Instagram post, Hasibuan named her latest collection as D’Jakarta. She aspired to depict ‘the colourful and vibrant world of this cosmopolitan city’ through the collection. Hasibuan was inspired by Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia to present the remarkable Indonesian ethnic mosaics at the event.
Hasibuan said she used printing techniques for belt and batik for the patterns on the hijab to add an element of boldness and an Indonesian touch to her designs. And she chose the earthy tones of gold, green and peach to make the detailed designs.

Hasibuan posted how proud she was “to showcase the beauty of Indonesia to the world” at the event where she collaborated with Wardah — a make-up and original cosmetic brand from Indonesia.
