Beyonce’s much-loved album ‘Renaissance’ just got a new meaning as the singer unveiled a stunning couture collection directly inspired by the album’s songs in collaboration with the French luxury brand, Balmain. The 16-piece collection is dedicated to the 16 tracks of ‘Renaissance’ and has been co-designed by Beyonce and the brand’s creative director Olivier Rousteing.
Taking to Instagram, Beyonce thanked Rousteing and Balmain for bringing her album to life in couture. “Designing alongside you was freeing—thank you for allowing me to celebrate the human form, to take artistic risks, to push boundaries and to freely express myself,” she wrote.
Called ‘Renaissance Couture’, the collection consists of several dramatic and sculpted ensembles, including hammered metal breastplates, 3D-printed bustiers, and fireworks made from feathers. “Along with luxe velvets, meticulously embroidered gowns and a wearable crystal chandelier. It’s details, details, details, all the way down to Beyoncé’s autograph forming the base of pairs of platform heels,” CNN noted.
According to Balmain, when Rousteing decided to share sketches and musings inspired by Beyonce’s seventh studio album ‘Renaissance’ with the singer, there was no game plan. “But the two creatives quickly saw this as an opportunity to push their art to the next level, teaming up as co-designers for a collection unlike any other. Between late-night creative sessions online and a week of lookbook workshops in LA, the pair and their teams created an environment in which they could simply experiment, dream, and push each other to the max. The result? An absolutely one-of-a-kind couture collection, with each silhouette directly inspired by a track from the glorious, joy-filled album and featuring cutting-edge couture techniques and savoir-faire.”
For Rousteing, creating this couture collection was “more than a dream”. In an Instagram post, the designer penned a note for Beyonce saying, “You inspired me every day since the beginning of my career. Renaissance is more than an album it’s FREEDOM, it’s STRENGTH, LOVE and BATTLE FOR A BETTER FUTURE. 16 couture looks for 16 songs and now our couture Renaissance is out and I have tears in my eyes when I see all that we did. Thank you for being You. For creating together on the rhythm of Renaissance and sharing both arts: music and fashion together. You were right it’s our Virgo Power and I love You forever.”
The collection, which came together in five months, has been released just weeks ahead of the singer’s spring and summer world tour. For Rousteing, the collection has also made fashion history. “This appears to be the first time that a Black woman has overseen the couture offering from a historic Parisian house. And those designs were created in partnership with the first Black man to ever oversee all the collections at a historic Parisian house,” he told Vogue.
