It is considered the festival of joy, happiness, and prosperity and is marked by decorating homes with diyas and candles, dressing up in new clothes, exchanging gifts, and indulging in delectable Indian cuisine.

The festival is observed on the 15th day of Kartik in the Hindu lunar calendar, on the Amavasya Tithi, with this year being celebrated on Monday, October 20, 2025.

It is a five-day festival which starts with Dhanteras and concludes with Bhai Dooj, with Diwali being celebrated for two days: Chhoti Diwali, also known as Naraka Chaturdashi, and Badi Diwali, also known as Diwali.

The Amavasya will begin on October 20, 2025, at 3:44 PM and conclude on October 21, 2025, at 5:54 PM, marking the new moon phase and a significant time for spiritual practices and offerings.

The auspicious Lakshmi Puja Muhurta on Amavasya will be observed from 7:21 PM to 8:19 PM, with the Pradosh period falling between 5:51 PM and 8:19 PM, making this an ideal time for performing rituals and prayers, as mentioned in the Drik Panchang.

Govardhan Puja Oct 22 Wednesday 06:26 AM – 08:42 AM (Pratahkala) Celebrates Lord Krishna’s act of lifting the Govardhan Hill to protect villagers from torrential rains. Devotees prepare and offer ‘Annakshetra’ (food).
Bhai Dooj Oct 23 Thursday 02:10 PM – 04:24 PM (Aparahna) A day to honour the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters perform aarti and apply tika on their brothers’ foreheads, praying for their well-being.
