Dhanteras 2025 Date: Diwali festivities kick off with Dhanteras, considered auspicious for investing in gold and silver in the form of jewellery and kitchenware. It is also known as Dhanatrayodashi, which lasts for five days. ‘Dhan’ in Dhanteras denotes wealth, while ‘teras’ represents the thirteenth day of the lunar cycle.
This year, it will be celebrated on October 18, which is a Saturday. According to Drik Panchang, Dhanteras Puja Muhurat begins at 07:29 PM and ends at 08:20 PM.
“The finest period for Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras is during Pradosh Kaal, when Sthir Lagna is observed“; ‘Sthir’ means ‘fixed’, i.e., immovable, and if Dhanteras Puja is performed during this time, Lakshmiji will remain at your home; thus, this is the greatest time for Dhanteras Puja.
It is believed that on this day, the Goddess of Wealth, Lakshmi, came from the ocean while milk was being churned. As a result, Lakshmi and Kubera, the Gods of Wealth, are revered on this day.
However, the Lakshmi puja conducted on Amavasya, two days after Dhantrayodashi, is considered more important.
Dhanteras is also observed as Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti, the birth anniversary of the God of Ayurveda.
According to legend, King Hima’s 16-year-old son would die on the fourth night of his marriage as a consequence of a snake bite.
To save his life, his wife gathered all of her gold jewels and coins in one heap. She then performed songs and told stories to her spouse to keep him from falling asleep.
When Yamaraj, the god of death, appeared in the form of a serpent to kill the prince, the brilliance of the gold blinded him, and he sat captivated, listening to the wonderful music and stories.
Since then, in a ritual known as Yamadeepdan, people light diyas all night to revere Yamaraj and ward off evil.
