Like many new mothers, Deepika’s curiosity about baby care is common. Dr Tripti Raheja, Lead Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology at CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, shares key recommendations to help parents manage spit-ups in newborns effectively.
Expert tips on managing baby spit-ups
Feed in an upright position: Keeping the baby’s head higher than the stomach during feeds helps reduce discomfort and the risk of reflux.
Burp frequently: Burping after every 1-2 ounces (30-60 ml) of milk for bottle-fed babies or after switching breasts during breastfeeding can prevent gas buildup.
Avoid overfeeding: Small, frequent feeds based on hunger cues are better than rigid feeding schedules.
Keep baby upright after feeding: Holding the baby upright for 20-30 minutes post-feed aids digestion and minimizes spit-ups.
Use slow-flow nipples for bottle-fed babies: A slow-flow nipple ensures controlled milk intake, reducing excessive air swallowing.
Check for allergies or reflux issues: If spit-ups are frequent and accompanied by distress, consult a pediatrician to rule out gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or formula sensitivities.
Additionally, parents should avoid tight diapers and clothing that put pressure on the baby’s abdomen, ensuring a comfortable feeding and digestion process.
