Abhay Deol recently sat down for a freewheeling chat with astrologer and life coach Jai Madaan, during which he spoke about being regular with meditation for the past couple of years. “One really effective meditation is tratak or candle gazing with a ghee lamp. My focus is not on not blinking. My focus is more just concentration, sitting in stillness, observing, and trying to ground myself before I start the day,” the actor said.
But what exactly is tratak?
Dr Chaitanya Vemu, consultant ophthalmologist, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said that tratak is a yogic practice where one focuses on a single point, often a candle flame. “It’s about concentration and relaxation rather than ‘eye exercise’ in a medical sense. While it can reduce mental stress and improve focus, there’s no solid scientific proof that it strengthens vision or prevents eye disease,” said Dr Vemu.
Are there any benefits for the eyes at all?
Indirectly, yes, said Dr Vemu. “When you practice tratak, your eyes get a short break from constant screen use and shifting focus, which can feel soothing. Some people also report less eye strain and better tear film stability due to the controlled blinking pattern. But keep in mind, these are supportive effects, not a substitute for eye care,” said Dr Vemu.
What should one keep in mind if trying this practice?
Don’t overdo it. According to Dr Vemu, staring at a flame for too long without blinking can cause dryness, irritation, or even headaches. “If your eyes feel strained, watery, or uncomfortable, stop. Always practice in moderation and in a safe setting,” said Dr Vemu.
Is tratak suitable for everyone?
Not quite. Dr Vemu said that people with uncorrected vision problems, chronic dry eyes, migraines, or eye conditions like glaucoma should be careful. “For them, it might make discomfort worse. Children, especially, should not be encouraged to do this without supervision,” said Dr Vemu.
Then what’s the best way to care for your eyes?
The basics never change. Follow the 20-20-20 rule during screen use (every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), blink often, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet rich in antioxidants, and get regular eye check-ups. “Practices like tratak can be seen as complementary, but not a substitute for proven eye care,” said Dr Vemu.
Tratak may calm the mind and give your eyes a mindful break, but it isn’t a miracle cure. “If you want healthy eyes, lifestyle habits and timely medical care matter much more,” said Dr Vemu.
