Senior advocate and former additional solicitor general of India Pinky Anand has been appointed a judge in the Bahrain International Commercial court, which will begin operations on November 5.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Anand said there will be a swearing-in of judges attended by the monarchy and Bahrain Prime Minister on November 5.
According to Bahrain News Agency, His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa issued a Royal Decree (63) of 2025 appointing members of the Dispute Resolution Panels Of the Bahrain International Commercial Court (BICC), based on a proposal of the Prime Minister and the approval of the Cabinet.
The decree appointed the following as members of BICC:
1. Joan Donoghue
2. Dr Pinky Anand
3. Judge Abdulrahman Al Sayed Mohammed Al Sayed Ahmed.
4. Judge Khalid Hassan Ali Ajaji
5. Dr. Mohammed Salah Abdelwahab
6. Aysha Abdullah Mohammed Mutaywea
7. Chiann Bao
8. Philippe Pinsolle
Anand, who specialises in constitutional, civil arbitration and criminal law, represented the country in various national and international fora including BRICS. She is a founding member of BRICS Legal Forum.
A graduate of Harvard Law School and Inlaks scholar, she is an Honorary Professor of Amity Law School. She has been awarded the French National Order of Merit by President of the French Republic.
She is a door tenant at No 5 Barristers Chambers in London.
Anand, who has over 40 year of experience at the bar, was an ASG in 2014 and before that was a member of the All India National Executive of BJP. She has served as the national convenor of BJP’s legal and legislative cell.
Minister law and justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, was quoted by Global Arbitration Review as saying, “This recognition of an eminent Indian jurist on such a distinguished global forum is a testament to India’s growing stature in international arbitration and commercial dispute resolution. Her appointments reflects the confidence reposed in Indian legal expertise and will further strengthen cross-border judicial cooperation.”
Last year, former Supreme Court judge Sanjay Kishan Kaul was appointed a member of the Bahrain International Commercial Court, being one among the nine members appointed to BICC.
The BICC is a part of the Bahrain government’s “Team Bahrain” to enhance private sector investment in the country by providing a forum for dispute resolution between parties.
