In the fifth arrest in connection with singer Zubeen Garg’s death, his cousin and Assam Police Service officer Sandipan Garg, who had accompanied him on the trip to Singapore, was arrested by the Assam police on Wednesday.
Sandipan Garg, who is Deputy SP (Law and Order) at Kamrup with the Assam police, was arrested when he reported to the CID office in Guwahati where he had been going for interrogation for the past few days, officials said.
Without elaborating the grounds of Sandipan’s arrest, SIT head M P Gupta said, “Today we arrested Sandipan Garg and he will be produced before the court seeking police remand for further questioning. The investigation is ongoing. We are interrogating Rupkamal Kalita, and we will again issue summons to the remaining people from Singapore to report here.”
Zubeen, 52, died on September 19 after he went swimming while on a yacht outing in Singapore. Sandipan, a cousin of the late singer superstar, was part of the yacht outing, officials said. Last week, two more people who had been part of the outing, Zubeen’s co-musicians Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprava Mahanta, had been arrested in the case.
Along with these three, the prime accused in the case registered in connection with Zubeen’s death – North East India Festival organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta and his manager Siddharth Sharma – were arrested on October 1. The SIT constituted to probe the incident is investigating a case lodged under charges of murder, criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide not amounting to murder, and causing death by negligence.

Since Tuesday, the SIT has also been interrogating Rupkamal Kalita, who is part of the Assam Association Singapore, which had reportedly organised the yacht outing. Kalita has reported in Guwahati in response to a summons issued by the SIT to him along with seven other members of the Singapore association.
