The Tripura Police Monday arrested the driver and helper of a truck from Assam after 9.24 lakh yaba tablets worth Rs 28 crore were seized from the vehicle’s fuel tank during a routine checking at the Betbagan naka point in Dhalai district.
Speaking to reporters, Mihir Lal Das, Superintendent of Police, Dhalai, said, “This operation was conducted as part of our ongoing Nesha Birodhi Avijan (anti-narcotics movement). The routine checking at the naka point led to the seizure of a huge drug cache coming into Tripura from outside the state. We have arrested two persons and further investigation is going on.”
The officer added that they were interrogating the two arrestees to determine the intended destination of the drugs.
A case has been booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, at the local Ambassa Police Station.
Ambassa is the headquarters of the Dhalai district and one of the major centres connecting Assam with the rest of Tripura.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had alerted all northeastern states at the NEC Plenary meeting held last year about the drug menace and urged chief ministers in the region to clamp down on the smuggling of drugs.
Monday’s drug seizure was one of the largest of its kind in the state, the police said.
