Addressing a gathering of All India Professionals Congress in Mumbai on Friday, retired Supreme Court Judge Justice J Chelameswar reflected upon various facets of his career in jurisprudence as well as on the relevant issues ailing the judicial system in the present day. Replying to a question about people’s expectations of seeing him as the Chief Justice of India, Chelameswar stated that he “would be happy to be remembered as a good judge than a bad Chief Justice”.
Being a participant in the Supreme Court judges’ revolt against the then Chief Justice Dipak Misra that took place in January, Chelameswar was also questioned about the trigger behind the decision to hold the unprecedented press conference. Replying to the query, Chelameswar said that he shall not divulge any information for “one more year”.
Addressing the issue of pendency of cases before the courts in the country, Chelameswar said that establishment of new courts remains a “low priority item” for all political parties.
“Have seen political leaders promise laptops, TVs, buffaloes, before elections. Never heard a leader promise a new court. Courts are a low priority item for all political parties,” said the retired judge of the Supreme Court.
