The bodies of a woman and her 15-year-old daughter were pulled out from under a pile of rubble after their house collapsed in a landslide amid heavy rainfall, in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal on Saturday.
The deceased have been identified as Sarita Devi (40) and her daughter Ankita (15), residents of Toli village, officials said.
“On Saturday morning, the Ghansali police station informed the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) team of the possibility that two persons likely got buried under debris near Budha Kedar. The site, 10 kms away from Budha Kedar, requires a 1-km trek to reach. Acting on this information, the SDRF team — led by chief constable Kuldeep Singh (Post Ghansali) — reached the spot and began their search operation,” the SDRF said in a statement.
“During the rescue operation, the bodies of Sarita Devi and her daughter Ankita were pulled out from under the debris, and handed over to the district police. Due to heavy rainfall, SDRF Commander Shri Manikant Mishra has directed the team on duty to camp in Budha Kedar area,” the SDRF added.
Earlier on Friday, the SDRF rescued 106 people after an alternative bridge near Godar on the trek to Madmaheshwar was washed away amid incessant rainfall. The wooden bridge over the Markanda river was destroyed in rain, disrupting the pilgrimage to the temple, officials reported.
