The meeting of the joint committee of Parliament on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill took a dramatic turn on Tuesday after Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee smashed a glass bottle and ended up hurting himself during a heated discussion with BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay.
Banerjee reportedly hurt his thumb and finger, which started bleeding during the row, and was provided first aid by officials and MPs present during the meeting. He was later seen being escorted back to the meeting room by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president Asaduddin Owaisi and Aam Aadmi Party MP Sanjay Singh.
The committee chaired by BJP’s Jagdambika Pal was listening to the views of a group of retired judges and lawyers when the Opposition members questioned their stake in the bill.
The committee was scheduled to hear the views of Cuttack-based Justice in Reality and Panchasakha Bani Prachar Mandali and five Indian Union Muslim League MPs on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
Last Monday, several Opposition MPs walked out of a meeting of the joint House committee after a former office-bearer of the Karnataka State Minorities Commission and BJP leader deposing before the panel made a comment on Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, reportedly over the allotment of Waqf land.
The 31-member committee has been tasked by the Lok Sabha to scrutinise the contentious Bill, which has drawn protests from Opposition parties and Muslim organisations. It has witnessed stormy scenes since its first meeting on August 22.
