A red alert for heavy rains on Monday has been sounded in six districts of Uttarakhand, including Dehradun and Nainital, by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

Badrinath National Highway in Pipalkoti area in Chamoli has been blocked due to debris triggered by a landslide. Several vehicles have also been buried under the debris, news agency ANI reported. Rishikesh-Chamba National Highway was also blocked for traffic due to a landslide near Kunjapuri Bagardhar in Tehri while the movement of heavy vehicles has been stopped on Rishikesh-Devprayag-Srinagar National Highways at Sakhnidhar.

Meanwhile, Dehradun has been witnessing severe waterlogging as rainfall continues to lash parts of the state. As per PTI, around 1,169 houses have been damaged and a large amount of agricultural land washed away due to the incessant rainfall.

Heavy monsoon showers have also caused flood-like situation in Maldevta.


The water level of Nandakini river crossed the danger mark in the Nandanagar area of Chamoli as the district witnessed heavy rainfall.


Meanwhile, Uttarkhand government has directed their district magistrates and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) to remain alert to assist the people in case of any emergency as landslides triggered by incessant rains have blocked traffic on various roads, including national highways, affecting the movement of people.

The state has been reeling under incessant downpour that have left 60 people dead and 17 missing, news agency PTI reported.

A red alert is a warning for extremely bad weather conditions that are certainly going to disrupt travel and power and pose a significant risk to life.

Intense to very heavy spells of rain with thunder and lightning at isolated places have been forecast in Tehri, Dehradun, Pauri, Champawat, Nainital and Udham Singh Nagar districts where the red alert has been sounded, while Haridwar district is under orange alert.

Meanwhile in neighbouring Himachal Pradesh, at least seven people were killed and three others reported missing in a cloudburst in the Jadon village in Solan district, said officials Monday even as a rescue operation was underway.

Two houses and one cowshed were also washed away, according to news agency ANI.
