With the counting of votes commencing at 8 am on Saturday, early trends show Congress candidates Qazi Mohamad Nizammudin and Lakhapat Singh Butola leading in Manglaur and Badrinath assembly seats, as per Election Commission data. The by-elections for the seats in Uttarakhand took place on July 10. As per Election Commission data, the Badrinath and Manglaur constituencies had recorded a voter turnout of 49.80 per cent and 68.24 per cent, respectively.
Two-way contest in both Uttarakhand seats
Badrinath is set to witness a direct contest, with Congress fielding a new face in Lakhpat Singh Butola, and the BJP giving a ticket to the previous sitting MLA Rajendra Bhandari.
In Manglaur, the Bahujan Samaj Party has fielded Ubaidur Rahaman, son of late Sarwat Karim Ansari, who was the sitting MLA from the constituency. Rahaman will be up against against Congress’s Qazi Nizamuddin. The BJP had fielded Gujjar leader Kartar Singh Bhadana from the seat, which has never been won by the saffron party.
The votes were polled for ten candidates contesting from Manglaur, and four from the Badrinath constituency.
Why were the bypolls conducted?
The by-election for Manglaur was necessitated because of the death of sitting BSP MLA Sarwat Karim Ansari in October last year.
The Badrinath seat fell vacant after sitting MLA Rajendra Bhandari resigned and quit the Congress party to join the BJP in March this year.
Violence during voting for Manglaur seat
While polling for the Manglaur assembly seat was underway on Wednesday, a clash broke out at the Libberheri booth, with several people sustaining injuries. Congress candidate Nizamuddin alleged that miscreants also opened fire near the polling booth, though police said there is no confirmation of this.
