Two people died and two others were seriously injured after a house in the Helang area of Joshimath town collapsed Wednesday following heavy rain.

On Tuesday night, Joshimath police informed the SDRF that a house near the crusher plant in Helang has been damaged, in which people are likely to be buried. An SDRF rescue team, NDRF and local police reached the spot.

According to SDRF, there were 7 people in the house, of which 4 were buried under the rubble. The teams rescued 3 people by cutting the concrete roofs and sent them to Joshimath CHC for treatment. While one body was recovered from the spot, another person died during treatment.

The state information department said that two victims with serious injuries have been referred to a higher centre Wednesday morning by Heli Ambulance.

In another incident, a bridge connecting the footpath in Goundar village and some part of the road in the Madmaheshwar valley washed away on Monday, leaving several passengers stranded.
