The Deputy Commissioner of the Excise Department in Varanasi shot dead a former block development committee (BDC) member over an old enmity in Pratapgarh’s Sardih village Saturday morning.

The police have registered an FIR against accused Jung Bahadur Singh (57) based on the complaint filed by the family members of the victim, Motilal Maurya (also in his 50s). The victim’s family have also named Singh’s wife and daughter who had accompanied the accused.

Police said Singh was involved in a dispute over one bigha land with his cousin whom Maurya was reportedly close to.

Pratapgarh SP Akhilesh Chaurasia said: “Accused Jung Bahadur… went straight to Maurya’s house… shot him in the temple with his licenced revolver. He escaped from the spot.”
