A 19-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was allegedly murdered in Goa on Thursday by the owner of a rented SUV and his two friends, after they suspected that the teenager was attempting to steal the rented vehicle. The police have arrested the three accused in the case.

The police said the body of the victim—identified the victim as Kapil Chaudhary, a native of Pata Khas village in UP’s Hathras district—was found in the bushes near a road in a hilly area of Thivim around 8.30 pm on Friday with multiple injuries on the face and some abrasions on the hands. He was rushed to the district hospital in Mapusa, where he was declared brought dead. The police said they found a PAN card bearing the name Deepak Thakur in his pocket.

The police said Shrinivas Singh, 46, a native of Hathras, later informed the police that his son Kapil Chaudhary had gone to Goa and could not be traced. He said his son’s mobile phone was found switched off and that his last location was in North Goa’s Thivim. On Singh’s complaint, the police registered a case of murder.

The police said an investigation found that the victim hired a Mahindra Thar on rent from Gurudat Lawande, 31, a resident of Candolim, on Thursday under a fake identity by producing the soft copy of a driving licence bearing the name Deepak Thakur. Later that day, Lawande found through a tracker installed in the vehicle that his car had crossed the Goa border and was headed towards Banda in Maharashtra. Lawande and his two friends—Daison Agnelo Coutinho, 31, and Suraj, 21—left for Maharashtra and chased Chaudhary, eventually intercepting him and the Thar at Kankavali in Maharashtra.

Rahul Gupta, Superintendent of Police, North Goa, said the accused trio brought Chaudhary to Thivim and assaulted him with fist blows, kicks, and a wooden stick. “At 11 pm, they left him in an injured condition on the roadside in a hilly area. The accused purchased a liquor bottle from a local wine shop and placed the empty bottle in the victim’s trouser pocket, to portray that he was drunk,” he said.

The police said that during interrogation, Lawande admitted to committing the crime along with his associates.
