Two militants were killed in a gunfight with the Indian Army along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch Thursday evening while trying to infiltrate from the Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK), security sources said.
Police sources said three militants tried to cross into India from Poonch’s Khari Karmara. While two were killed in the gun battle, the third managed to escape back into PoK, one source said.
The infiltration attempt comes at a time when there was increased security at the border following intelligence inputs of possible incursions. Sources claim that security forces have been conducting searches in Doda and Kathua in Jammu following reports of militants having come down to these areas from higher reaches.
This also comes after a marked decline in militant activity in Jammu’s Poonch and Rajouri district throughout last year.
According to the sources, the searches are part of an anti-militancy strategy and an area domination exercise before the onset of summer. It also comes just over a week after J&K’s Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat’s visit to the strategically important location of Basantgarh.
Significantly, while the two areas saw a notable fall in militant activity in 2024, there was also a sudden spurt of it in districts such Reasi, Doda, Kishtwar, Kathua, Udhampur and Jammu districts, causing concern among the security agencies.
