Two armed women Maoists were killed during an encounter in a joint operation of the District Reserve Guard and Bastar Fighters in Dantewada district on Wednesday morning.
Formed in 2022, the Bastar Fighters are a 2,100-member force of local villagers trained by the Chhattisgarh Police to fight against Maoists. “It’s the first major success for Bastar Fighters. After almost 18 months of training, they have now been inducted for operations along with experienced DRG, STF, CoBRA and CAPF teams,” Inspector General of Police for Bastar region, Sundarraj P said.
According to officials, the teams set out on Tuesday from Aranpur towards Dantewada-Sukma border to check Maoists activities. The encounter took place around 7.30 am Wednesday, around four kilometres south of Nahadi camp, in which two Maoists were killed. An INSAS rifle and 12 bore rifle was found in their possession, they said.
The two Maoists were identified as Kumari Lakhe alias Jilo Madvi (35) and Mangali Padami (25). Jilo Madvi was a Malangir area committee member and the militia command-in-chief of the area. SP, Dantewada, Guarav Rai said, “Police had declared a reward of Rs 5 lakh for her.”
Padami was a member of platoon number 24 of The People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army of Maoists. She was carrying a reward of Rs 2 lakh.
