A day after a minority organisation filed a case against Tripura Scheduled Caste Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das accusing him of fomenting communal hatred through social media, veteran Congress legislator Birajit Sinha Sunday said the minister’s post should be removed at the earliest.
Speaking to reporters, the Kailashahar MLA said, “Sudhangshu Das has expressed something on social media… I feel this is a sensitive issue. It is an effort to disturb peace and solidarity in the state and incite tension by referring to whatever happened during the Mughal era. Earlier, he made similar comments on Facebook and hurt Hindu-Muslim relations. He ought to focus on maintaining peace in the state as a responsible minister. The stuff he is speaking about on Facebook is highly sensitive. I feel these comments should be deleted from social media at any cost.”
Earlier, Tipra Motha founder and BJP ally Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarma also criticised the minister for his post. “Someone who is swearing on the Constitution of India should refrain from making such statements. I am indeed shocked and condemn such language by anyone, leave alone those who hold a responsible position in the government,” he said.
Das has hit the headlines several times in the recent past for his controversial comments on social media.
On November 3 last year, he claimed that if Muslims have the Waqf Board, then Hindus were entitled to have a ‘Sanatan Board’, otherwise there should be no such board.
Earlier in 2024, the minister stated in a Facebook post that Hindus have no moral right to do puja as they have failed to protect their deities.
The post was deleted soon, but the issue took the Assembly by storm with Opposition MLAs demanding his apology.
