A resident of Santirbazar in South Tripura district on Wednesday married off his wife to a vegetable vendor with whom she was allegedly having an extramarital affair.

The wedding was solemnised according to Hindu rituals at a local temple.

“I don’t have any issue with it. Let them live together happily,” the man, identified as Nayan Saha, told reporters.

When asked, the newly-married couple said they married each other as per mutual consent.

According to local sources, Nayan Saha, 33, discovered that his wife of eight years was having an extramarital affair with a resident in the same neighbourhood.

Saha repeatedly asked his wife to sever ties with the man, but she continued with the affair. Thereafter, Saha and his family decided to marry them off.

Jayanta Das, an officer at the local Manaipathar police outpost, said Saha was learnt to have tortured his wife owing to her extramarital affair, and he even caught her and her paramour red-handed once.

Last month, a man in Uttar Pradesh’s Sant Kabir Nagar district got his wife married to her lover after learning about their affair. He even volunteered to raise his two children on his own.

In July last year, however, a man was held for allegedly marrying a married woman in the Unakoti district of Tripura. The police detained the man after a video went viral in which he could be seen applying sindur (vermillion) at the hair parting of the married woman.
